Delivery Options

Summer Fill:  Because propane is usually at its lowest price point during the summer months, due to low demand, we encourage our customers to take advantage of this time to fill their tanks. Our Summer Fill program is designed to top off each customers’ tank (to 80%) before the winter home heating season arrives.  Please contact our office between June and August to schedule your Summer Fill.

Scheduled Fill Delivery:  We recommend signing up for our Scheduled Fill Delivery program for your convenience and safety. During the winter months, we deliver to each customer enrolled in the program on a scheduled delivery. Please contact our office to enroll in this program.

Will-Call:  If you are not part of our Scheduled Fill Delivery program, it is your responsibility to monitor the level of propane in your tank and to order more propane when necessary.  McMahon Oil recommends that customers call to schedule a delivery when their tank gauge reads between 10% and 20%.

Contracting:  McMahon Oil offers yearly contracts for propane during the winter home heating season. Prior to the winter home heating season, a letter is sent out to each customer with the current propane price and the contract details. If contracted, the price can be locked in for the winter home heating season with a prepay amount of $0.20 per gallon. Also, a pre-buy option (pay in full at the time of the contract) is available at a discounted price.

Budget Plans:  A budget plan allows for predictable monthly payments to be applied to the customer’s yearly propane usage. If enrolled, payments are divided into 10 equal monthly payments (August-May). Please contact our office for more details or if you would like to participate in our yearly budget plan.

Appliance Rebates & Incentives

The Minnesota Propane Association (MPA) and National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) currently have several incentives available to promote safe and expanded propane use. We want to share these available programs with you and help you to take full advantage of these incentives to improve your propane system. Please contact us to discuss these incentives and ensure that program funding is still available prior to beginning your project. We would be more than happy to help you!

The following rebates apply to new construction, change of energy source, or replacement:

  • Save $800 when you install a propane water heater!

  • Save $400 when you install a propane furnace or boiler!

  • Save $100 when you install a propane clothes dryer!

  • Save $1,000 when you install a combination boiler (space heating and hot water)!

Please contact McMahon Oil prior to replacing or installing your new propane appliances for additional information and requirements on the Appliance Rebate Programs.

Propane Safety

How can I tell if there is a propane leak?

Propane has a very distinctive smell. As a protective measure for your safety, a strong odorant is added to propane so that you will easily be able to detect the smell. Make sure your entire family can recognize the odor of propane gas. It is recommended that you install a propane gas detector in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Carbon monoxide detectors are also recommended.

What should I do if I smell propane or suspect a leak?

If you ever smell propane or suspect a leak, follow these six important steps:

  1. Ensure that there are No Flames or Sparks: Immediately put out smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.

  2. Leave the Area Immediately: Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect the gas is leaking.

  3. Shut Off the Gas: Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

  4. Report the Leak: Call us immediately to report the leak at (320) 634-5290 and we will provide you with further instruction and respond immediately. If you are unable to reach us, call 911 or your local fire department for assistance.

  5. Do not return to the Building or Area: Stay away from the suspected leak until we, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to reenter the area.

  6. Get your System Checked: Before the propane system is turned back on, we will repair any damages and perform a leak/pressure test to ensure that the system is operating properly.

Heating with Fuel Oil

McMahon Oil offers full service home delivery of fuel oil. We offer both #1 and #2 home heating fuel. Whether you have an outside fuel oil tank or it is located inside of your basement, we are equipped to take care of all of your home heating needs.

If you are new to heating your home with fuel oil, please consider the some of the following information:

  • Most oval shaped fuel tanks have a full capacity of approximately 265 gallons

  • Tanks located underground or inside of your house generally use #2 fuel oil

  • Tanks located outdoors generally use #1 fuel oil or a blend of #1 and #2 fuel oil – feel free to ask us for a recommendation if you are unsure

  • In general, #1 fuel oil has a slightly higher price per gallon than #2 fuel oil

  • Tanks located in your basement that have an outdoor fill pipe must have a steel piped filling system and a vent to be filled

  • You must learn to read the gauge on any interior tanks that have outside fill pipes; when we fill the tank from the outside, we have no way of knowing when the tank is full. When you place your order, you must tell us how many gallons are needed.
