Switching Propane Companies:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I switch propane companies?

Switching propane companies is usually much easier than people expect. The process starts with a complete safety inspection and review of your current propane system. Then McMahon Oil will schedule your installation, transfer any remaining propane over to your new tank, and get your new account set up.

How much does it cost to switch propane companies?

Every installation is different, so costs can vary depending on your current setup, tank ownership, and whether any system updates are needed.  In many cases, switching propane companies costs nothing, or less than customers expect.  We are happy to provide a free, no-obligation evaluation and explain any costs upfront.

Can I switch propane companies if I lease my propane tank?

Yes.  If your current propane tank is owned by another propane company, McMahon Oil can replace it during the switching process. We handle tank replacements regularly and can help coordinate the transition.

Who owns my propane tank?

A good rule of thumb is that if the tank has a propane company's logo on it, the propane company likely owns the tank.  If you're unsure who owns your tank, we can usually help determine ownership if you contact us.

Can a propane company fill another company's tank?

No.  If a propane tank displays another company's logo or markings, that generally means the tank is owned by that company. For safety, liability, and legal reasons, propane suppliers typically cannot fill tanks owned by a competitor.  If you'd like to switch propane providers, we can discuss replacing the tank.

What if I own my propane tank?

If you own your propane tank, switching providers is often even easier.  McMahon Oil simply requires a complete safety inspection before filling the tank.  Once we confirm the system is safe and up to code, we'll set up your account and schedule delivery.

Do I have to wait until my propane tank is empty before switching propane companies?

No, you do not need to wait until your tank is empty.  We can usually transfer the remaining propane from your old tank into your new tank so you don't lose the fuel you've already paid for.

What happens to the propane left in my tank when I switch propane companies?

IMcMahon Oil can transfer the propane from your old tank into your new tank during installation.  We have several methods for transferring propane and can almost always find a solution.

Will I lose propane service when I switch propane companies?

Only briefly.  Propane tank swaps are completed in a single day.  While your propane system will be temporarily shut down during installation, interruptions are typically minimal and customers are usually back up and running quickly.

Do I need to be home during a propane tank installation?

Yes—at least briefly.  We need access to your home near the end of the installation so we can relight appliances, perform safety checks, and confirm everything is operating properly.  Most customers only need to be available for the final 15–20 minutes.

Can I switch propane companies during the winter?

Yes.  In most cases, propane providers can complete tank replacements and service transfers during winter. Occasionally, temporary gas lines may be used until weather conditions allow permanent installation work to be completed.

Where can a propane tank be placed?

Propane tank placement depends on several factors, including tank size, safety clearances, terrain, accessibility for deliveries, and applicable codes.  During a site visit, we'll review your property and discuss locations that are both safe and practical.

Can my propane tank be moved to a different location?

Usually, yes.  Customers sometimes relocate propane tanks because of landscaping projects, construction, convenience, appearance, or easier snow removal.  Because propane tanks must meet safety and distance requirements, the proposed location must first be evaluated to ensure it can be done safely and properly.

How far does a propane tank need to be from a house?

The required distance depends on the size of the tank and the specific property layout.  State and national propane codes establish minimum clearances from homes, property lines, air conditioners, generators, ignition sources, and other structures.  Because every property is different, a site evaluation is the best way to determine where a propane tank can be safely installed.

What if my propane system needs repairs or updates?

If we discover safety or code issues during an inspection, we'll explain them clearly and discuss the available options.  Sometimes older propane systems require updates to meet current safety standards. Our goal is never to create unnecessary work, but we also won't ignore safety concerns.

Are propane tanks safe?

Yes.  Propane has been used safely for decades and is one of the most heavily regulated fuels in the United States. Modern propane systems include multiple safety features, and professional installation, regular inspections, and proper maintenance help ensure safe operation.

How Do I Replace My Electric Stove with a Gas Stove?

In most cases, replacing an electric stove with a gas stove is a straightforward project.  Electric stoves typically cannot be converted to run on propane. Instead, the electric range is replaced with a propane-compatible gas range. If your home already has propane service, we can usually extend a gas line to the kitchen and connect the new appliance.  The exact installation requirements depend on your home's layout and whether propane piping is already available nearby. During a site visit, we can evaluate your setup, discuss your options, and provide an estimate for any work that may be needed.
